Calla Lily
n
nReferring to the Greek word “beautiful” rarely has a flower had so many different names as the calla lily. The flower also has many different symbols as well as names including beauty, purity and innocence.
n
nIt grows in a wide range of colours, the most popular being white and used at both funerals and weddings alike. Endemic to South Africa the Calla lily enjoys warm temperatures and grows well in swampy moist areas. When planting though, Cala lilies should be planted loose but in well-drained soil and prefer to be in the sun or partial shade When I create an arrangement using artificial calla lilies I actually prefer to have them as a stand-alone flower but perhaps I may add a touch of leatherleaf or eucalyptus. I did get a request for an artificial black Cala lily arrangement and it created a very mysterious look that worked really well.
n
nBirds of paradise
n
nIntroducing one of the most spectacular and impactful flowering plants native to tropical and semi-tropical zones is the Strelitzia otherwise known as the bird of paradise.
n
nIt is a species of a flowering plant indigenous to South Africa and needs warm temperatures, rich well-drained soil but also plenty of sunshine in order to produce its characteristic blooms. This evergreen perennial is best known for its beautiful and dramatic flowers which resemble a tropical bird. We at Demmerys have attempted to replicate this magical plant using an artificial bird of paradise in an exclusive tropical arrangement.
n
nPalm leaves
n
nNothing gets the mind-boggling about a desert island retreat like palm trees do. Depending on the variety palm trees can last up to 100 years old.
n
nAs well as being used in floral arrangements palm leaves can be used for basket weaving, cooking and although they can differ in appearance they still retain a number of common features. I have added artificial palm leaves to this tropical arrangement to give it both colour and a steadying influence amongst such magnificent artificial tropical flowers.
